This article attempts to flag some of the difficult issues that a school will encounter in relation to a pupil whose parents are separated or in the process of separating.

Every school has the responsibility for educating, protecting, and guiding its pupils. However, where the pupils are also boarders, this responsibility is greatly increased. Schools offering boarding facilities must take significantly greater care and consideration for the welfare of their boarder pupils. The school becomes responsible not just for the safe daily education of the pupil but also steps in to a role of in loco parentis – a substitute parent to the pupil. This article explores some of the additional considerations for schools offering boarding facilities.
